Campsite restaurant makes it into Good Food Guide

A campsite cafe that was transformed into a gourmet restaurant has been named as one of the top places to eat in Britain.

The Marram Grass Cafe is housed in an old chicken shed at the White Lodge Caravan Park and Campsite on Anglesey.

Brothers Liam and Ellis Barrie opened the eatery six years ago, turning it from a fast food cafe into a restaurant serving food made from locally sourced ingredients.

Now the site restaurant has made it into the Good Food Guide for the first time. Guide editor Elizabeth Carter described it as "an extraordinary find".

She said: "The low building with its corrugated iron roof may channel scout hut and air raid shelter in equal measure, but the interior charms and the cooking shows ambition and skill.

"It's a simple recipe for success that not many manage to get so right."

Liam Barrie said the family was "really proud" of the food being produced.

"We changed the existing menu from one that relied on frozen food to ours, which sources from as many local producers as possible. We are really proud of that," he said.

"We like staying creative, and are always experimenting with our dishes made with ingredients such as Menai mussels and line-caught Anglesey sea bass."

For the third year running, L'Enclume, set in the village of Cartmel in Cumbria, took the top spot of number one restaurant in the UK.

Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, London, came second, and Pollen Street Social, also based in the capital, was ranked as the third-best restaurant in the UK.

The Good Food Guide, owned by Waitrose, is compiled based on reader reviews and anonymous inspections.
