Quick guide to buying camping chairs

c033e365-deac-4fb2-b129-03da7f8801d9
Camping chairs are largely what you make of them. Be sure they will pack into your car along with all your other camping gear. And make sure they’re not too heavy, or indeed tricky to set up/put down. We don’t want any Norman Wisdom deckchair moments, after all.

Also, and there’s no polite way to put this, but if you’re of a slightly weightier persuasion yourself, do make sure the seat’s construction is strong enough. Not just the frame, but the fabric you’ll be sitting on, too. It’s something many suppliers have noticed in recent times, bringing out whole ranges that can cope with bulkier (sorry, ther’s no way aound it) bodies.

To lounge? To sit? To hold your drinks and nibbles? Have we really got that sophisticated? Probably not. As ever with products of this ilk, there are simply loads of brand names out there. Even non-camping retailers get in on the act from time to time, too. Just beware of those who are out to make a quick buck with offers that seem too good to be true...

The best? That depends on who’s doing the buying and who’s doing the sitting. Just treat the following as a whetting of the appetite as to what’s available. We’ve kept it to full-size folding chairs, and even here there is an excellent variety of model (including a vast choice of kids’ sizes).

Actually my very favourite campsite seat is the Sling Chair from Coleman. Well-made to a straightforward design, lightweight, packs down easily to a compact shape for transporting. Inexpensive (if you see them for less than £30 you’re in), and my two have definitely lasted. The aluminium framing helps – no chance of rust. Available in canvas or mesh (summer) finishes (plus you can buy a towelling cover that is, admittedly, a bit pricey). Oh, and extremely comfortable – thanks to a higher than usual backrest and a good angle to the squab.

Camping chairsThere’s also Gelert’s rather neat Milldale, past winner of a Camping award, that was applauded for the neat way it packed down. Complete with handle for easy carrying.

CARRYBAGS

Can be useful for seats that pack up to the tightest of dimensions, as opposed to just folding (nearly) flat.

STORAGE

Despite calling themselves outdoor chairs, these products aren’t going to last long if left out in the elements for long periods. Similarly, if you’re away for the day and there’s any chance things could get a bit breezy, best practice is to stow the seating away inside the tent.

FABRICS

Replacement fabrics are all but unheard of for this type of product these days. It’s our throwaway world, unfortunately… luckily, the fabric is usually some form of polyester, so can be easily cleaned (although not all manufacturers offer cleaning instructions).

FRAMES

Steel or aluminium? That’s generally the choice. And it’s a bit like tent poles. Steel is heavier, but tends to be less expensive. Aluminium signifies a more premium product, and of course it won’t corrode in the same way. A mix can be a good compromise, of course.

CHOICE

Don’t like the look of any of the models featured here? Don’t worry. There are simply loads of camping seats out there. Shop around. As ever, do try them out for comfort (it’s not rare for a bit of frame to cut across exactly the bit you want to be most comfy). Also, check four yourselves how easy they are to fold/unfold ready for (in)action.
