Celebrity Campers

Top 12 Famous Campers

We are forever hearing that more and more celebrities are taking up camping, but who exactly are all these superstars who are supposedly cluttering up our campsites? Frankly, we were a bit sceptical, but a bit of research showed that camping has indeed been the holiday choice for some of the biggest names in the celeb world. And Kerry Katona.

In no particular order, here's a dozen of the most famous names to have chosen to go on a camping break.

1. JUSTIN BIEBER

Teenage pop phenomenon

Justin Bieber

During the summer, pop heartthrob Justin revealed to his 11 million followers on Twitter that he had gone on a camping holiday and that it was “legit”. We think this means it was good. He tweeted: “Enjoying time with my family, literally in the middle of nowhere, but this nowhere place is pretty beautiful. On the water, about to have a campfire. Camping is legit.”

2. PINK

Pop superstar

Pink

US singing star Pink is another celeb who revealed her love of camping via Twitter. She recently told how she spent US Independence Day under canvas, telling her followers: “So fun camping out with family and buddies.”

?3. KERRY KATONA

Former pop star and reality TV regular

Kerry Katona

The Celebrity Big Brother contestant went camping in Brittany last summer with friends and family. The former Atomic Kitten singer described her “brilliant” trip to France as a “proper old-school British holiday”. She wrote in her OK magazine column: “We were the only English people there so we could talk about absolutely everything we wanted! My financial situation has changed a bit since my wild holiday in Marbella earlier in the year and this was a bit different, but I loved sitting around the campfire each night, it was like Carry On Camping!” The mind boggles…

4. TOM CRUISE AND KATIE HOLMES

Hollywood golden couple

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes

Hollywood superstar Tom and his wife Katie love camping, apparently. So much so that they planned to take a trip across the USA, shunning luxury hotels for a tent. According to the Mirror, Katie said: “We love going camping. Once when we were camping Tom made his pasta carbonara for me. He knows exactly how to do it. A pinch of this, a pinch of that. He has a recipe, but he also kind of improvises by himself. You have to do the egg at a certain time.”

5. ALEX JAMES

Former Blur bassist

Alex James

Britpop superstar turned cheese obsessive enjoys camping breaks with his wife and their, um, distinctively named children Beatrix, Geronimo, Artemis, Galileo and Sable. The musician told the Daily Express: “Claire and I have never let the fact we have a large family stop us from doing anything and we’ll often take off for a weekend camping trip. We’re pretty relaxed about it all and I think that helps.”

6. SARAH BEENY

TV presenter

Sarah Beeny

Sarah made her name fronting the home renovation show Property Ladder, but she is a huge fan of the outdoors. In a 2008 interview, she said: “I’ve had 20 years of jet-setting around the world, but nothing beats a simple camping holiday in the UK with my husband and two small boys. It’s all about making your own fires and kebabs and lying back and looking at the stars.”

7. LEE MACK AND SEAN LOCK

Stand-up comedians

Lee Mack and Sean Lock

TV panel show regulars Mack and Lock are good friends off-screen. Mack told a local newspaper earlier this year: “I know Sean very well. We’ve been on camping trips together.”

8. EVA LONGORIA

Desperate Housewives star

Eva Longoria

The glamorous actress got tongues wagging in 2009 when, according to the Daily Mail, she was spotted emerging from her tent on a campsite in Normandy looking “well rested and absolutely gorgeous.”

9. BEN FOGLE

TV presenter and adventurer

Ben Fogle

He first came to our attention on the TV series Castaway so perhaps it’s not surprising that Ben likes to get away from it all under canvas. He said: “When I’m not travelling for work, I love the south-west of England, Cornwall or Devon. I like to pitch my tent on a clifftop overlooking the sea.” He also revealed to Camping magazine earlier this year that he hoped to take his two children on UK camping holidays.

10. JENNIFER CONNELLY AND PAUL BETTANY

Husband-and-wife movie stars

Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly

The Hollywood couple are big fans of camping holidays – because the paparazzi refuse to trail them during the “unglamorous” breaks. Bettany said: “Three weeks ago me and my missus and the kids were covered in mud for three days, because we got rained on from a great height when we were camping in the White Mountains (in New Hampshire). There’s no comfort, no blow-up beds or anything – you’re just in a tent and you fire up a little Primus to cook your food, and again you have to do that a long way from the tent in case the bear smells the food. Everybody stinks, and you’re cold and you’re wet and yet you see things you’d never see from a car or a hotel room.” To be honest, I’m not sure that he’s really selling camping at its best.

11. LOUISE WENER

Pop star-turned-writer

Louise Werner

Another Britpop survivor, the former Sleeper singer is now a best-selling author. She also told her Twitter followers about her summer camping holiday in France. Like Kerry Katona she drove to Brittany with her family, but you suspect that’s where the similarities between the trips begin and end.

12. COLONEL MUAMMAR GADDAFI

Former despot

Colonel Gaddafi

Back in the 1980s, Libyan dictator and dodgy tracksuit wearer ‘Mad Dog’ Gaddafi was persona non grata in most countries of the world so a luxury foreign break was never really an option. Home videos recently emerged of the Gaddafi family playing together while on a camping holiday outside Tripoli in the late 80s.
