Lake District camping - Sykeside

d20409b1-6d0a-4432-a244-f89932014a27
SYKESIDE Camping Park lets nature provide for you.

Set in the heart of the Lake District in Dovedale Valley, surrounded by Dove Crag, Hart Crag and Fairfield, with tranquil Brotherswater nearby, it offers a stunning backdrop. A favourite with families, walkers, climbers and ramblers alike, it boasts 35 designated walks from its base.

Situated at the northern foot of the Kirkstone Pass just off the A592, the site is easily accessible from the dramatic southern approach via Windermere, or the pleasant sweeping road south past Ullswater, through Glenridding and Pattersdale. Once here, you can understand why campers say it has one of the most attractive views of all campsites in the UK. For, on the campsite field, you find yourself in the bottom of a bowl, with a 360-degree mountain sweep.

Current owners Alan Metcalfe and John Bee bought Sykeside Camping Park and the adjoining Brotherswater Inn five years ago at the back end of Foot and Mouth. The devastating impact on tourism had seen profitability go out the window, and the original owners were keen to sell up.

Alan and John saw no reason to dramatically change things on site and instead have balanced ideas with financial input, steadily refurbishing the inn, Barn End pub, shower block, laundry and pot washing room, shop, farmhouse and cottage.

One major change has been the acquisition of a Caravan Club licence to operate as a Certificated Location, thus allowing up to five caravans on site. The five hard standing sites, all with electric hook-ups, are situated in a secluded area of the park, but close to all the facilities, with the Brotherswater Inn only 200 yards away.
The site is run very much as a family affair, with Alan’s son Ian managing the bar and restaurant facilities at the inn, and John’s daughters Michelle and Joanna also working on site.

Sykeside is one of only a few campsites in the National Park open throughout the year. The owners see a regular throughput of campers in the winter, and the bunkhouse is usually busy.

Several rooms here contain between two and six beds. All are well appointed with their own toilet and wash-basin. Centrally heated and carpeted, they contain a table, chairs and storage facilities.

There is also an indoor cooking area. Sole use of the Bunkhouse rooms and Barn End bar, together with an adjacent camping area and car park, can be arranged for larger parties and groups, or for family celebrations.

Campers will find all the usual facilities associated with a modern site – and more. The facilities of the Brotherswater Inn complement those of the Park and are available to all visitors.

Alternatively, campers can relax in the Barn End bar, with its well-stocked bar and a good selection of home-cooked meals. There are also extensive outside seating areas that have heating available for the cooler evenings. The Barn End bar is open throughout the summer and at holiday weekends in the winter. Food is served in the Brotherswater Inn, where breakfasts are also available for campers, as are packed lunches upon request.

There is also a cottage on site, which is part of the original farmhouse, and is ideal for families or small groups. It sleeps up to five and has a fully fitted kitchen with dishwasher, central heating, TV, DVD, a small private garden and parking for two cars.
