King Robert the Bruce's Cave Caravan & Campsite

NOT far from Gretna Green and only just over the Scottish Border, this site has a wealth of local attractions and a peacefully rural atmosphere. The presence of an historic location as well as that of a number of pretty, wildlife-rich walks make it a good choice for family holidays, as well as for those wishing to follow the tradition of marriage after elopement!

For campsites, making an impression is sometimes easy. Bruce’s Cave, as it’s known, has the ability to make memories because there’s more to it than a collection of pitches with added facilities. There’s the old mansion, for a start, which has been restored and now has luxury self catering apartments to let. Ideal for up to six people per apartment. Then down below, there’s a cave – not just any old cave but the one in which Robert the Bruce hid from the English in 1306.

Now we know what’s in the name, what of the site itself? Accessed via the Roman Road that runs considerably straighter than neighbouring Kirtle Water, the site is in a truly rural location. Grass pitches ranged around level central areas enjoy the benefit of partial shading from the surrounding trees. Still more beneficial is that the wooded area houses more of an adventure playground that that provided for children. Apart from having pleasant places in which to walk, the locale is also a haven for wildlife, both avian and mammalian.

There’s no cause to be concerned about the site’s being too close to nature, though. A modern building has most of the facilities campers will need. The on-site shop is notably well stocked, with the basics and more. As well as assorted comestibles, it has toys and tea towels, sweets and statuettes – life’s necessities and souvenirs are available. More pedestrian but equally vital essentials share the same building. WCs, shower and bathing facilities, basins and washing up sinks are all present and correct and a fully-equipped laundry stands nearby. Outside, the freshwater supplies and the waste disposal points are intelligently located.

There being lots to do on and off-site makes this a popular venue for families. On site, you can visit The Bruce’s bolthole, get a takeaway meal, walk the dog or watch the wildlife. For the more adventurous, clay pigeon shooting, with guns and tuition, is a new addition.

Off site, you can visit Gretna’s famed Old Blacksmith’s Shop, where so many elopers tie the knot. This has a museum, eating places and a variety of shops. For more dedicated shoppers, there’s the Gretna Gateway Outlet Village and local attractions range from The Devil’s Porridge – an exhibition in and about the gunpowder factory that helped turn the tables in both World Wars – to Westlands Activities, in Annan.

King Robert the Bruce’s Cave Caravan and Camping Site may have an unwieldy title but its lowland location and neat layout makes it family friendly.
