100 Top Campsites: Pubs

ec97a320-f5fa-456a-8c23-46b31412db8a

Here are some of our favourite sites where there are hostelries within a short walk of your tent

THE BLACK SWAN HOLIDAY PARK
YORKSHIRE
Fearby, Masham, Ripon, North Yorkshire HG4 4NF
01765 689477
blackswanholiday.co.uk
Black Swan combines a picturesque campsite with a 17th Century public house and restaurant. The site overlooks the Burn Valley with views stretching 40 miles over the Vale of York and local moors. The bar is stocked with Black Sheep (the brewery is two miles down the road) and breakfasts are available.

STRANGERS HOME INN CARAVAN & CAMPING SITE
ESSEX
The Street, Bradfield, Manningtree, Essex CO11 2US
01255 870304
thestrangershome.co.uk
The Strangers Home is a refurbished Victorian public house serving home cooked food, fine wines, real ales and lagers. Live music and children’s activities take place throughout the year and the inn boasts a children’s play area and outside seating overlooking the campsite. Pitches are spread across a four-acre level site surrounded by fields.

WASDALE HEAD INN
CUMBRIA
Wasdale Head, Near Gosforth, Cumbria CA20 1EX
019467 26229
wasdale.com
Thanks to its location at the foot of England’s highest mountain Scafell Pike, the Wasdale Head Inn would probably be massively popular even if it was nothing more than a wooden shack with a bar. The fact that it’s a welcoming, cosy, wood panelled hostelry, makes it all the more appealing to the many hill walkers and climbers who pass through its doors. Ritson's Bar is named after the pub’s first landlord, Will Ritson – a huntsman, wrestler, farmer, fellsman and guide. Today the bar is where everyone congregates to share tales of their day on the fells, while enjoying the bar meals and real ales. Like all good pubs, there is a roaring log fire to keep you warm in winter.

ALDE GARDEN
SUFFOLK
The White Horse Inn, Low Road, Sweffling, Suffolk IP17 2BB
01728 664178
aldegarden.co.uk
Set in the grounds of the Sweffling White Horse pub, one of only a few in England that doesn’t actually have a traditional bar, this quirky campsite is more like camping in someone’s wild flower garden. Alde Garden lies just 20 minutes’ drive from the coast and only has a handful of tent pitches plus several glamping options, but it’s more about quality than quantity here. Rustic pathways lead to the pitches and take you through trees, flowers and wildlife areas. Facilities include a campfire, covered field kitchen, pizza oven, compost loo and jungle shower. The herb garden is perfect for adding flavour to your cooking. The site is also home to numerous ducks and hens and a pond.

THE MASONS ARMS
SOMERSET
41 Lower Odcombe, Yeovil, Somerset BA22 8TX
01935 862591
A traditional village pub, that brews its own beer and serves up great food. The campsite’s pretty good too.

THE GOLDEN LION INN
CORNWALL

Menherion, Redruth, Cornwall TR16 6NW
01209 860332
golden-lion-inn.co.uk
A proper country pub with lakeside restaurant, the campsite is out the back, along with award-winning gardens

THE QUIET SITE
CUMBRIA

Ullswater, Penrith CA11 0LS
07768 727016
thequietsite.co.uk
The Quiet Bar might just be the UK’s best campsite bar. The site even has its own ale – The Quiet Pint – produced exclusively by the local Tirril Brewery.
