Bespoke builds for off-grid touring

Full review

The MOS Adventure Tor

OK, this is a 4x4-themed issue and this particular campervan, which we spotted at the Yorkshire Motorhome & Campervan Show, Harrogate, is based on a rear-wheel drive Mercedes Sprinter.

Nevertheless, this is very much a campervan designed for off-grid adventures – and you could specify a 4x4 version.

The converter, MOS Adventure, is a new company – only four or five builds under its belt at the time of the show – but its founders created their first camper in 2018 and claim two decades experience in interior finishing.

Each build is bespoke and vehicles can be designed for mountain biking, surfing, paddleboarding or family holidays, but all with an emphasis on off-grid living.

The vehicle

Shown here is the company’s demo vehicle, called the Tor and priced at £122,500 on a 2023 Mercedes Sprinter with 170hp motor and nine-speed automatic gearbox.

The cab spec also includes heated seats in black leatherette, the 10.25in MBUX display, heater ducting to the rear passengers, a 360-degree camera system, an electric sliding door, front fog/cornering lights and a leather steering wheel.

The exterior

Externally, there’s certainly an off-road vibe, even if only two wheels get the power – in fact, the BFGoodrich tyres on 17in Evo Corse wheels may well be sufficient for slightly less adventurous customers.

If it’s the looks you’re after, the full set of Mule Vans accessories – roof rack, rear ladder and spare wheel carrier and 52in light bar – plus Terrawagen body kit, do the job.

It also gets Flarespace rear pods to provide the extra width in the bedroom, chosen as MOS believes these American units are the best for quality and aesthetics. Meanwhile, the side windows are automotive-style single-glazed units with sliding opening sections.

The gear

It’s the off-grid gear that impresses here, with Victron Energy supplying the 400Ah lithium batteries, touchscreen control panel and 3kW inverter, while two 120W Tigerexped solar panels are mounted on the roof.

Heating is by the popular Truma Combi D 6 E diesel/230V system and there’s a 100-litre inboard fresh water tank, as well as an external shower.

The interior

Inside, the Tor boasts all-season insulation and interior panelling finished in marine vinyl, but while the floorplan – with a front lounge, rear bedroom and washroom and galley amidships – is exactly as you’d expect, the details aren’t what you’d anticipate from a more mainstream manufacturer.

It’s quite a functional, no-nonsense design with MOS saying that it likes to use components from brands that it knows and trusts.

The front lounge uses an RIB rear travel seat in combination with the swivel cab chairs and an island leg table. There’s full-height walk-through into the cab and Wanderbug blinds that are insulated, waterproof and magnetic – so easily removable for cleaning.

The kitchen

The kitchen is more of a shock, partly because it offers such an expanse of worktop along the nearside and partly because none of the usual appliances – bar a stainless-steel sink – are here.

Cooking is on a Ninja eight-in-one Flip mini oven, which can air fry, bake, grill, toast, etc, mounted on a slide-out shelf under the counter.

There’s the option to have a portable induction hob, too, while the fridge sits under the Ninja but is again a break from convention.

Instead of a built-in unit, this is a Dometic CFX3 55-litre portable compressor coolbox.

The washroom

The washroom is different, too, with no ‘proper’ door but an insulated, zipped panel that unfurls from above. There’s no basin or cassette toilet – a Porta Potti is provided as it’s easily removable (for more showering room) or replaceable.

Then there’s the variety of Silwy accessories – glasses, condiments bottles, etc – that attach magnetically to the furniture rather than rattling around in cupboards.

And finally, comes a ‘Murphy’ bed at the rear that folds away for load carrying and measures 1.92m by 1.29m in use.

Where to buy

MOS Adventure has been exhibiting at Warners’ outdoor motorhome shows – see outandaboutlive.co.uk/shows – or you can visit it (by appointment only) at its premises in Powys.
