Hasty holidaymakers and speedy suppliers have led to the development of an effective, low-cost method of calming traffic which is being marketed to holiday parks around the UK.
Working with a local holiday-park owner, a small electronics firm, Pandora Signs,
in Hawkshead, Cumbria, has come up with the Speedchecker.
Costing under £2,000, the device performs more accurately and offers greater durability than other more-costly alternatives.
At its heart is a powerful radar module capable of registering precise vehicle speeds from a long distance and then flashing up the figure on a large, bright LED panel.
An unmissable ‘slow down’ message is also displayed if the vehicle exceeds the pre-set limit and then disappears as the driver returns to the determined safe speed. Trials indicate that comings and goings are slowed to a much more leisurely pace.
Easily re-locatable, the vandal and weather-resistant Speedchecker is powered by a battery which operates for around six months before needing a re-charge.
The risk of visitors using the speed display to measure their personal best in mph has been avoided by blanking the read-out at an upper limit.
