Rowanwater residential park in rural north Lancashire has been identified as one of the UK's most delightful and environmentally-friendly places in which to live.
Botanist David Bellamy has named Rowanwater as a winner of his prestigious Conservation Award.Located in the village of St Michael's-on-Wyre near the market town of Garstang, the park is a newly-developed mix of high-quality residential and holiday lodges.
The properties are set around a picturesque two-acre lake on the banks of the River Wyre.
Rowanwater first opened in April 2014 and lies on the former site of Wyreside Fisheries which was owned by the same family business now running the park.
During development and landscaping of the grounds, many hundreds of native trees and hedges were planted.
These trees have provided a wind-sheltered area where pink-footed, greylag and Canada Geese nest in the spring, while newly-stalled bird and bat boxes provide protection for other species.
Dozens of water plants have been introduced around the lake which provides nesting areas for moorhens, coots and mallards and creates a spawning ground for toads.
An otter has recently been spotted by residents and the area also draws spectacular visitors such as kingfishers, sparrow hawks and the lesser-spotted woodpecker.
In addition to further landscaping and wildlife initiatives, the owners of the park also intend opening a coffee shop and bistro.
