Jess's Windermere challenge makes waves for charity

Braving the chilly waters of Windermere in the Lake District has netted a cool £1,746 for charity, thanks to holiday-park worker Jess Sutcliffe and her year-long training for the challenge.

Jess, who says she could only previously manage one length of a swimming pool, completed a full mile of the lake, the equivalent of 64 lengths, to raise the money for Parkinson's UK.

Jess was taking part in the Great North Swim in Cumbria where she lives and works in Ambleside as a customer liaison manager at Skelwith Fold caravan park.

The young swimmer said that she decided to enter the Great North Swim after the park played host last year to entrants and supporters taking part in the event.

"It was just such a fantastic atmosphere here that I got caught up in the enthusiasm and told everyone I would give it a crack, despite never having tackled anything similar before," said Jess.

"Luckily, one of the caravan holiday home owners at the park is a keen triathlon athlete, and he very kindly offered to coach me over the winter and spring.

“I was amazed when I found my time was 47 minutes – ten minutes faster than my best in training!"

Jess had a very personal reason for choosing her charity. "My grandmother, Constance, has been affected by Parkinson's for 25 years, so I have been brought up seeing the impact it has on sufferers.
