Civil War at Escrick as Hart's Nook opens

THE descendant of an English Civil War general was on hand to open the new Escrick Estate lodge development of Hart’s Nook last month.

The development is set in Black Tom’s Wood, believed to have been where Sir Thomas ‘Black Tom’ Fairfax met with other Parliamentarian leaders before the siege of York in 1644.

The Honourable Rupert Fairfax was joined at the opening by The Monday Players of Escrick, led by David Lane, who renacted the trial and execution of Charles I with Escrick’s owner, Charlie Forbes Adam, playing Charles I.

As part of a Civil War themed family fun day, the equestrian group, At Full Tilt, also took part, dressed as parliamentarian soldiers on horseback, and there were various 17th century-style entertainments, including ducking stool, stocks, coconut shy, apple bobbing, treasure hunt, Hebridean sheep display and a hog roast.

About 250 people enjoyed the event, and proceeds from a cake stall were donated to Macmillan Cancer Support. In the last month around £2,800 has been raised at Escrick Park events for the charity.

Hart’s Nook is the last phase in the development of Hollicarrs, which Mr Fairfax said was “one of the loveliest holiday parks I have seen”.

The new development will have 41 lodges at prices from around £190,000 to £250,000. Two show homes are currently on view – a Savannah Special from Lissett and a Jasmine Opus from Advent, both 50ft x 22ft.

Hollicarrs already has 140 holiday homes and lodges, and has both a Bellamy Gold Conservation Award and a VisitBritain 5-star rating.
