Morban Isaf

CARAVAN holiday home owners at Morben Isaf holiday home and touring park near Machynlleth in west Wales were recently overjoyed at the return of the osprey Monty, who nested for several years in the next-door Cors Dyfi nature reserve.

And there was further cause for celebration when he arrived with a mate who, just a couple of weeks later, laid her first egg. It was hoped that another one or two eggs might follow.

Monty had previously gone two years without attracting a female in time to breed, and the nature reserve’s project manager Emyr Evans said, “This is a wondrous event for us – and for the ospreys. It was in 1604 that ospreys were last recorded breeding on the Dyfi, so we are witnessing history in the making.”

Morben Isaf park managers Dave and Jayne Hollingsworth were equally ecstatic. “It’s absolutely brilliant news,” said Jayne. “ It has been a long time coming and we are keeping everything crossed that it all works out for the birds.

“The Dyfi Osprey Project team has worked so hard for the last three years for this moment and everybody on the park has been rooting for them. The ospreys have created a lot of interest and we have been receiving requests from owners for regular updates.”

The nature reserve, run by Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust, has a hide and visitor centre, which has large plasma screens showing live pictures of the ospreys and other rare birds. Morban Isaf’s holiday home owners, as well as its touring visitors, are among thousands of people who have dropped into the visitor centre.
