TfL to introduce tougher emissions rules for motorhomes

Although COVID-19 has caused the suspension of all road charging schemes in London, make sure you are aware of pending changes to the scheme when it is back up and running as emissions regulations get tougher.

From 26 October, 2020, Transport for London is introducing tougher emissions rules for motorhomes (and other diesel powered vehicles) that weight more than 3,500kg.

If your motorhome has a gross vehicle weight (GVW) over 3.5 tonnes, your motorhome will need to meet Euro 6 emissions levels for NOx and particulate matter (PM) to be able to drive within the zone without charge. If Euro 4 or 5 PM levels are met the charge wil be £100 per day but if your vehicle is Euro 3 or older, without modification, the charge is £300 per day.

This does not just apply to those living in London as there are a selection of campsites within the zone; to access these you will have to drive on roads where charges apply. This includes Lee Valley’s Edmonton site, the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s Abbey Wood and Crystal Palace sites, but excludes the Camping and Caravanning Club’s London locations.

It is essential that you use the online TfL service to check your motorhome’s status before planning a journey. Also, it is worth noting that TfL told us, “if there is a diversion and the route takes you inside the M25 and the zone, then no fees or fines will be charges, as long as you stay on the official diversion route.”

Motorhomes under 3,500kg GVW only need to be Euro 3 compliant for PM levels to drive in the zone without charge.
