Tanzania rated top spot to visit in Africa
Research by tour operator, Discover Africa, and campervan rental company, Drive South Africa, has revealed the top five destinations to visit on the Continent
Tanzania took the number one spot for the most popular destination to visit in Africa in 2023 (39.9%), followed by South Africa, Kenya, Botswana, and Zanzibar.
The research also showed that self-drive safaris are on the rise, with a 140% increase in overall bookings and a whopping 457% increase in campervan bookings from rental company, Drive South Africa, between 2021 and 2022.
The companies also asked respondents about their budget for a prospective trip to Africa, and found that almost 40% will have a budget of £2,000 to £3,000 per person, and only 5.8% of travellers have a budget of over £7,000 per person.
Perhaps predictably, the research found that seeing the Big Five was the most sought-after activity, with a staggering 72.1% putting it at the top of their to-do list, followed by wanting to see big cats, seeing animal migration, visiting the beach and spending time with family.
Andre Van Kets, co-founder and director of the Discover Africa group, says,
We’ve noticed that interest in motorhome trips and the more adventurous 4x4 trips into Africa's wilderness has grown quicker than trips requiring a ‘regular’ rental car, likely due to people's yearning to get into the great outdoors again following the pandemic.
With self-drive travel up by 140% from 2021 to 2022, there has been a rapid recovery of more than double since Covid-19. We predict that 2023 will see a further 30% increase in 4x4, camper and car rental-based self-drive trips into Southern Africa, especially with airlift growing in the region. Many major airlines have resumed flights to Johannesburg Airport – where the majority of self-drive trips into Africa commence.
