Get involved in the motorhome anti-tax campaign

The National Caravan Council (NCC) is urging people to take part in its campaign to overturn recent changes to the way new motorhomes are taxed.

As a result of a technicality, new motorhomes fitted with the cleanest WLTP Euro 6d/2 diesel engines – almost every new 2020 motorhome will be fitted with these ultra-clean engines – are no longer subject to a commercial vehicle tax band.

Instead, they are, for the purposes of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), now taxed as a car, which means buyers will be faced with a first registration fee of £2,135 (up from £265) and an increase in VED for a further five years, which equates to a further £2,870 in road tax compared to the previous system.

This, says the NCC, will have a devastating effect on the motorhome industry. There will be a substantial fall in British manufacturing, a collapse in demand for new products, and associated job losses throughout the supply chain.

As a result, it is pushing for the rules to be changed and there are three different ways – contact your MP, sign an online petition and Tweet your support – to give your backing to the campaign to help reclassify motorhomes as commercial vehicles and get a fair tax for new motorhomes.
