Fiat launches Euro VI engines for Ducato

The base vehicle used in the majority of European motorhome conversions, the Fiat Ducato, has been upgraded with the introduction of a range of Euro VI engines. The engines all use Low Pressure Exhaust Gas Recirculation system (LPEGR) to lower NOx emissions without, says Fiat, the complexity, added weight and additional costs associated with using emission additives like AdBlue.

Other base vehicle manufacturers like Mercedes-Benz and Peugeot use the AdBlue solution to achieve Euro VI compliance. AdBlue is an additive that users have to purchase and fill into a small (typically a 15 to 20-litre tank) which will last about 6,000 miles between refills.

Fiat's LPEGR solution functions by channelling exhaust gasses away after the diesel particulate filter (DPF), cooling them through a low-pressure EGR cooler and then recirculating them in advance of the turbo charger. Fiat says the LPEGR solution is ideal for motorhomes where simplicity, reduced weight and low running costs are important.

The Euro VI Ducato also gets a new 2.0-litre, 115bhp MultiJet II LPEGR engine to replace the current Euro V 2.3-litre MultiJet 110hp.

Offering up to 47.9mpg on the official combined cycle and CO₂ emissions of 157g/km, this new entry-level engine represents a significant downsizing compared to the engine it replaces but employs Fiat Professional’s latest technologies to offer "improved efficiency and lower running costs while improving performance and refinement."

The top-of-the-range 3.0-litre 180bhp engine has also been replaced by a new 180bhp 2.3-litre MultiJet II Power LPEGR, which returns 46.3mpg on the official combined cycle and has CO₂ emissions of 160g/k).

The core 2.3-litre MultiJet 130hp and 150hp engines remain but also adopt Fiat's LPEGR technology to ensure Euro VI compliance.

All the engines will be available with Fiat's Comfort-Matic robotised auto gearbox.
