DVLA reports delays for over-70s postal driver applications

The DVLA is currently reporting lengthy delays for postal drivers licence renewals and applications. Normal online applications are not affected

The delays come for drivers applying to keep the C1 category on their post-70 driving licence. Some readers are reporting prompt licence returns; however, we are hearing from more and more readers that have been waiting three or four months with no updates.

Why is there a DVLA delay?

Being based in Wales, the DVLA has had to work under tougher Covid rules, and industrial action at the organisation has further impacted on these licence renewals. Adding to the delays, over the most recent winter (December 2021 and January 2022), DVLA medical checks were temporarily paused to aid the rollout of booster vaccines.

A DVLA spokesperson said,

The DVLA tells us it is turning most applications around in 10 weeks, but the complexities of medicals that need further investigation may incur a delay.

How to ensure a prompt licence return 

Apply in good time – you should receive a renewal notice three months before your licence expires. Make sure you fill in both the D2 and D4 forms, getting the medical done by an approved service (GP or one such as d4drivers.uk).

Processing dates for paper applications can be found online here but if you haven’t heard anything by the licence expiry date, contact the DVLA and ask for a case number. Try all methods available and keep trying, as persistent readers have reported that they have eventually got through.
