The top attractions to visit in Blackpool

Bustling Blackpool

Blackpool is famed for its illuminations that keep the resort aglow during autumn. A trip to the town wouldn’t be the same without seeing them if you’re visiting anytime between 30 August and 10 November. Children will love the excitement of seeing the illuminations for the first time, much as most of us did in our childhood. And, if you haven’t seen them before, you’re never too old.

The Blackpool Tower (08448-561000) is the other noted attraction and you really should take a trip in the lift to ascend to the top. Once you’re up there you can experience floor to ceiling uninterrupted views across Blackpool and the sea thanks to the new Skywalk – metres of glass walkway that’s like walking on air. The Tower complex also contains a circus, and a Ballroom, dating back to 1894.

Another great attraction that forms part of the Tower, is The Tower Dungeon (01253-622242). Located in the depths of the iconic Tower, this is not for the faint-hearted, as you walk through 10 actor-led shows that bring Lancashire’s murky past to life, with the use of realistic sets, special effects, a few shocks and lots of humour.

For an evening of opulence why not take in a show at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre (01253-290190). A sight to behold, the Victorian auditorium features ornate, gilded plasterwork, a baroque ceiling and cantilevered balconies, thus creating a venue of great architectural character.

The beach at Blackpool is miles of unspoilt sand, easily accessed by steps running along the coastline. Central Beach is situated at the heart of Blackpool and has various nearby arcades and promenade amusements. Dogs are prohibited on the beach between the three piers (North, Central and South) between 1 May and 30 September. For a quieter beach with no dog restrictions, head one-and-a-half miles north of Blackpool to the village of Bispham or alternatively head south, to St Anne’s.

Don’t forget Blackpool’s other renowned attraction – the Pleasure Beach (08712-221234). Not actually a beach at all, the Pleasure Beach is an amusement park and resort, with a collection of nearly 40 rides including The Big One – the UK’s tallest and fastest roller coaster, and Infusion, the first coaster in the world to be suspended completely over water.

For a more relaxed day out, try Blackpool Zoo. Home to over 1,500 animals, the zoo is set in 32 acres of mature parkland with lakes, waterfalls and woodland. All the main animals are here: big cats, giraffes, elephants, gorillas and orangutans. New arrivals include a pair of giant anteaters and a pack of Iberian wolves.

Our tip: To make the most of a lot of these attractions and save money you can buy a Resort Pass. This is a ticket designed to bring the best of Blackpool at great value for money and provides users with one visit per attraction across seven days. See www.blackpoolresortpass.com for more details.
