Wales is a beautiful country with a whole host of attractions. Here we continue the list of our top 5 ...
4) The city of St Davids
On the western tip of the Pembrokeshire peninsula lies the smallest city in the UK – St Davids. It is a pretty place, famed mostly for the small, yet perfect, cathedral named after the country’s patron saint. The city is also surrounded by some of the finest coastline in Wales and situated in the Pembrokeshire National Park. The cathedral has been the dominant presence since the twelfth century and attracts visitors every year. The cathedral has a treasury of objects telling the story of Christian worship that began here 1,500 years ago, a gatehouse tower, which houses an exhibition, and the Cloisters Gallery which has arts and crafts exhibitions throughout the year. Next to the cathedral are the ruins of the medieval Bishops Palace (01437-720517). Bishop Henry de Gower was responsible for virtually the entire palace which consists of two ranges – the east range, which was his private domain, and the south range, which was grander and built for stylish entertaining. The great hall is the most impressive chamber in the palace and was the backdrop for banquets. If you can, catch an open-air theatre performance here as it is built for drama and is an experience not to be missed.
St Davids is also a good place to enjoy some fine dining. The Refectory (01437-721760) located alongside the cathedral serves tasty rustic lunches such as cottage pie with Welsh ale. For dinner, the Michelin-starred Cwtch (01437-720491) offers excellent local seafood, Welsh Black beef and Pembrokeshire cheeses in a relaxed, homely environment.
