Wales is a beautiful country with a whole host of attractions. Here we conclude our top 5 ...

5) The National Museums

Exploring Wales’ rich and vibrant history makes for a great day out that gets even better as the museums are all free to enter. You can discover the arts, language and diversity of the natural environment.

Big Pit, Torfaen (02920-573650) is the National Coal Museum where you can go 300 feet underground in the pit cage to discover what life was like for miners and walk through the underground roadways. Above ground explore the colliery buildings, blacksmith’s workshop and learn about coal's extraction from below ground.

On the shores of Llyn Padarn is the National Slate Museum, Gwynedd (02920-573700) which is sited in the shadow of Elidir mountain, site of the vast Dinorwig quarry. There are talks and demos, a row of old quarrymen’s houses, and the workshops and buildings are presented as though workers have just put down their tools and left for home.

St Fagans: National History Museum, Cardiff (02920-573500) is on the outskirts of the city and is an open-air museum exploring Welsh lifestyles and traditions. Visitors can discover original buildings from different historical periods and see how people lived in times gone by. It also features recreated workshops where craftsman demonstrate their traditional skills.

Head to the city of Newport to step back in time at the National Roman Legion Museum (02920-573550) and explore life in the Roman Empire. Wales was the furthest outpost of the Roman Empire and here you can learn what a formidable force the Romans were and see exhibitions and artefacts which show how they lived, fought, worshipped and died.

Other museums include: The National Museum Cardiff (02920-397951), The National Waterfront Museum, Swansea (02920-573600) and The National Wool Museum, Carmarthenshire (01559-370929).
