2) The Cliffs of Moher and Aran Islands
Many boat companies operate from Doolin Pier, in County Clare, offering services direct to each of the three Aran islands and also cruises to view the Cliffs of Moher for those who would prefer not to walk them. Cruises vary from trips to one island, all the islands, hour trips just to view the Cliffs, to full day outings.
Three rocky limestone outcrops make up the unspoilt Aran Islands – Inishmore, Inishmaan and Inisheer. On the islands the way of life is still traditional, full of character and history. The landscape is dramatic, with stone walls, tightly packed fields, narrow winding roads, craggy shores and sandy beaches. The islands are a mix of a walker's paradise and an escape from the modern world, with Inishmaan only having a population of 160 and Inisheer being only two by two miles in size.
The Cliffs of Moher are 214 metres tall at the highest point and stretch for nearly five miles along the Atlantic. They are home to one of the major colonies of cliff nesting seabirds in Ireland. A boat trip will give you a magnificent view of the towering cliffs from sea level and will take you by An Bhreannán Mór – a 70m high seastack which is home to many different seabirds, including Atlantic puffins. For anyone wishing to walk the path along the top of the cliffs, you will come across O’Brien’s Tower, an observation point on the highest point of the cliffs.
