Site Profile - Brynich

CLOSE to the A40 / A470 rounadabout in a scenic part of Brecon, Brynich was awarded the Best Campsite in Wales 2007 by the AA for good reason.

The Brynich experience starts as soon as you drive in the wide tarmaced entrance and park up next to the modern reception and supermarket building. Faced in local stone and dressed with hanging baskets it looks great from the outside.

Inside the staff are all smiles and the supermarket offers virtually everything the camper could ever wish for – no need to visit a larger store here. It’s licensed and sells camping gas, too. The pitches are spread over several fields, all divided by hedging, flowers and neatly mown grass. The site is very level and firm.

There are 130 touring pitches on offer in various grades – ranging from firm grass to all-singing-and-dancing monster-sized hardstandings with electric hook-up, water water and fresh water. These could accommodate most sizes of motorhome and are of such a capacious size that your van conversion will look a little lost on it. Motorhome users will also be pleased to note that the site provides a drive-over dump station for grey water.

As you’d expect the two heated toilet blocks are modern, bright, clean and well-equipped – showers, toilets and vanity units are all pristine. The family rooms are large and have showers, while even the disabled rooms are of a very high standard, with two offering baths (useful for the kids, too). With level tarmac roads connecting the pitches to the toilets, there are no access issues either for wheelchair users.

Naturally, there’s a laundry room (two, to be precise) complete with washing machines and dryers, ironing facilities, a drying room and indoor washing-up area. There’s also a camper’s kitchen with a fridge freezer and microwave (all are free to use).

Dog owners are well catered for too, with a five-acre walking area, as well as various woodland trails directly off the site.

The sites family-friendly credentials can’t be faulted, either, with the provision of two outdoor play areas – one in the heart of the site featuring an old tractor and one across a shallow river in the nearby woods. There’s plenty of room to cycle on site, too.

However, it’s the impressive Play Barn facility that will please parents most as it offers a massive indoor play centre that’s all exciting prime colours, slides, squishy balls and things to climb. Parents can keep an eye on there children in a gallery while enjoying a slice of homemade cake and a coffee.

Next to the Play Barn and opposite a gravelled courtyard it The Barn at Brynich – a fully licensed restaurant in a sympathetically-restored 17th century barn. This offers a sophisticated dining experience and a menu that is guaranteed to make you dribble. All manner of home-cooked local produce is offered, such as Brecknockshire lamb and beef, and organic vegetables and breads. Even the fresh herbs come from Brynichs own herb garden.

At the time of our visit the specials board listed Welsh Black fillet steak with sauté potatoes and choice of pepper, red wine or Stilton sauces, and for pudding, egg custard tart with fresh strawberries or white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake. Tempted? You will be…

Once you’ve managed to extract yourself from the on-site delights at Brynich (and we’d allow a few days…) then nearby Brecon town is well worth a visit – it offers all the usual shops, plus art and specialist outdoor shops. It’s a 30-minute walk along the nearby Brecon & Monmouth canal towpath. There’s also the Beacons Bus service that makes a regular stop on-site.

Cyclists will be pleased to note that the Taff Trail runs within 200 metres of the site, while hill-walkers can head in virtually any direction from the site and be assured of something pleasingly bumpy to clamber over.

During peak periods and bank holidays it’s advisable to book a pitch at this site.
