Motorhome Travel: St Mawes
You have to admit, there is nowhere quite like Cornwall.
I love the bucolic delights of the hidden coves, gardens and beaches of Cornwall’s sub-tropical southern shores.
And we were heading to one of these many delights – St Mawes – which is to be found in the wonderfully descriptive and aptly-named Roseland Peninsula at the mouth of the Percuil River.
St Mawes Castle now flies the flag of English Heritage and, when you stand on the banks below, Pendennis Castle – on the cliffs above Falmouth across the estuary – can clearly be seen.
Both castles were built around 1540 to protect the deep water estuary of the River Fal. There is a gentle two-mile coastal walk to the Church of St-Just-in Roseland. You might contemplate bringing your motorhome to this car park to undertake this walk, but understand the roads are narrow. Make sure that you know how to reverse!
I can think of no greater way of arriving at a town or city than in a small boat, be it in Falmouth, Truro, or Venice for that matter. It always feels like the start of a new adventure to step onto a harbour before setting off to explore the town...
