Motorhome campsites for regional delicacies

On your next touring holiday in the motorhome, try somewhere where you can sample a regional delicacy. We've picked out some top campsites below, to use for your trip.

Set four miles from Melton Mowbray in rolling farmland, lies this adults-only campsite. Melton Mowbray is a historical market town famed for its pork pies and stilton cheese. Ye Olde Pork Pie Shoppe, established in 1851, is the oldest remaining bakers of the authentic Melton Mowbray Pork Pie. Visitors can purchase pies and have a hand-raising pork pie demonstration. The campsite features large hardstanding pitches and individual washrooms in eco-friendly log cabins set around a lake. All pitches have countryside views are a five-minute walk from a modern licenced clubhouse. The site also has seven well-stocked fishing lakes.

For a tasty afternoon treat with a cuppa, try a Devon cream tea. To enjoy this jam and clotted cream-covered scone delight, head to the Mary-Jane Tearoom at A La Ronde, near Exmouth, or Tea on the Green in Exeter. The former is a National Trust 18th century octagonal folly, with the tearoom tucked away inside. The latter sits beside Exeter’s grand cathedral. Crealy Meadows is adjacent to Devon’s Crealy Great Adventure Park, which has over 60 attractions for the whole family. The campsite has heated facilities, evening entertainment, a shop and choice of pitch types.

New Quay Honey Farm is the largest in Wales with some 500 hives. The Farm is open to visitors and has a shop, a tea room and live bee exhibition. The exhibition allows visitors to view bees working in a variety of natural habitats (behind safety glass) and shows the amazing life of the honey bee. Pencnwc campsite is two miles from the fishing village of New Quay and has excellent on-site facilities. These include an indoor pool, play areas, club house, fish and chip shop and coarse fishing lake. New Quay has sandy beaches, a harbour, bars, restaurants and independent shops.

The Wensleydale Creamery and Visitor Centre tells the story of cheese making and you can watch the cheese makers in action. Pop into the shop afterwards to pick up some tasty treats and dine in Calvert’s Restaurant, to enjoy views of the Dales and homemade cheese-inspired dishes. Situated between the River Ure and the market town of Hawes, the campsite offers views within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. With the Dales on the doorstep, there's miles of landscape to explore. Hawes is one of the highest market towns in England and is full of character. Caravan Club members only.

If the name of the town of Bakewell, in Derbyshire, is mentioned, one thing springs to mind – Bakewell Tart. The Bakewell Tart Shop & Coffee House lays claim to being the home of the traditional Bakewell Tart and is located in the Peak District town of the same name. This historic town has antique shops, traditional pubs and is a great place to wander around. Rivendale Caravan Park is set in an old quarry, 20 minutes from Bakewell. You don’t have to leave the campsite to enjoy a Bakewell tart though, as the newly refurbished restaurant serves it. Located in converted stone stable buildings, the restaurant also serves evening meals and the bar is a relaxing place to enjoy a drink.

In County Kerry, a rugged terrain with heathers, wild herbs and grasses produces the distinctive texture and herbal flavour of its mountain lamb. QC’s Restaurant, in Cahirciveen, and The Bianconi Inn, in Killorglin, both serve fresh local Kerry mountain lamb and are within half-an-hour’s drive of Mannix Point. Also nearby is the home of Skelligs Chocolate Factory where you can watch chocolates being hand-made and buy products from the shop. Mannix Point is set on the southwest Kerry coast waterfront, within walking distance of the town of Cahirciveen. There’s modern facilities and a welcoming turf fire-warmed sitting room. Mannix is perfect for watersports, walking and fishing and is the nearest caravan park to the departure port for boats to the Skellig Islands.

The Isle of Wight is home to Goddards Brewery, near Ryde, which produces award-winning ales using the tradition of farmhouse brewing. The brewhouse dates back to the eighteenth century. For a refreshing pint head to one of the many pubs that have Goddard’s beers on tap. Try the Spyglass Inn, Ventnor, where you can also enjoy a fresh lobster salad, or The Waterfront, in Shanklin, which has a seaview sun terrace, perfect for a cool beer on a warm summer’s evening. The campsite is surrounded by countryside and a few minutes’ drive from the beaches of Shanklin, Sandown and Ventnor. On site there is a shop and café (both seasonal), games room, heated outdoor pool and crazy golf.

Scotland is famous for its whisky and, in Speyside, you’ll find more than half of Scotland’s malt whisky distilleries. There are two distilleries close to Speyside Campsite. At Macallan Distillery and the Glenfiddich Distillery you can take tours into the history and heart of the operation and then sample a wee dram. The campsite is lightly wooded with mixed grass and hardstanding pitches. There's electric and a well-equipped toilet block, dishwashing and laundry room. Another Scottish delicacy, Walkers Shortbread, is available from a factory shop in nearby Aberlour.
