Motorhome campsites for food festivals

From food and wine, to seafood and even chillies, there's a food festival out there to suit all tastes. So pack up the motorhome and head to one of these campsites to savour the flavour.

The Abergavenny Food Festival takes place on 21-22 September. Things to look out for at the festival include demos from top chefs and cookery writers, tastings, talks and Q&As with writers, critics and campaigners, plus guided walks to explore the wild harvest of field and hedgerow. There is also entertainment at Abergavenny Castle, exhibitor stands and children’s workshops. Adjacent to the River Usk, the campsite is only eight miles from Abergavenny. It is in a peaceful location, close to a golf course and pub. There is a well-equipped facilities block and an adults-only area.

This is a countryside campsite offering peace and quiet, but is handy for central London too as it’s only a 40-minute bus and tube journey into the city and one-day travel cards are available at reception. The Real Food Festival (3-6 May) and Alchemy Indian Food Festival (5-14 April) both take place on London’s Southbank Centre site. The Real Food Festival showcases some of the country’s finest food producers, top chefs, live animals and music, all along the River Thames. For something a little different, the Alchemy Festival brings the bustle, colour and flavour of the streets of India to London with a thriving Indian market. Lee Valley Campsite is close to both the River Lee Country Park and Epping Forest and the Lee Valley White Water Centre is only a few miles away, where you can try many watersports. The site is outside the Low Emissions Zone.

The Essex Festival of Food and Drink takes place on 20-21 July, at Cressing Temple Barns – a medieval moated farmstead with a range of rural barns and garden. The food and drink festival is one of the largest in the county, with exhibitor stands, a food court, workshops and chef demos – including Paul Hollywood from ‘The Great British Bake Off’ in the celebrity kitchen. Waldegraves Holiday & Leisure Park is a 40-minute drive from the venue. This makes the campsite ideal for the festival, but not too close that it’s full to bursting. Waldegraves has lots to offer the motorhomer, including an on-site shop, outdoor play areas, a heated outdoor pool and four well-stocked fishing lakes. There’s even an 18-hole pitch and putt golf course with driving range.

Highlights of the Dingle Peninsula Food & Wine Festival (October 4-6) include a taste trail involving over 60 outlets, where festival goers can purchase taste tickets and sample local cuisine. There will be live cookery demonstrations along with food workshops. Last year’s free children’s entertainment included pizza making classes and a Mad Hatter’s tea party. Woodlands is close to Tralee in a quiet woodland setting. With the town being easy to access, everything you could need is on your doorstep including a cinema and indoor waterworld. Top class facilities include extra-wide hardstandings for motorhomes, toilets and showers, an all-weather BBQ area and games room.

Shropshire is host to two festivals in 2013. The Ludlow Spring Festival, on 10-12 May, will have over 160 real ales, plus local food and drink producers, over 150 classic cars and live music. Then, during the weekend of 13-15 September, is the Ludlow Food Festival, where you’ll see over 160 exhibitors, hear free talks and demos and have a choice of activities for children. Ludlow is a new campsite with 135 luxury, fully-serviced pitches (especially large RV pitches are available too) and a modern toilet block. Ideally placed to explore the Welsh Marches, the park is within walking distance or a short drive of Ludlow town.

The Foodies Festival comes to Oxford’s South Park from 24-26 August, bringing a summer full of food, drink and entertainment. South Park has 50 acres of open space with views overlooking Oxford and will be filled with food and drink stalls, star chefs in the Chefs’ Theatre, food and drink masterclasses, children’s cookery theatre and a selection of world food too. The campsite is set a distance from the centre of Oxford, meaning it’s perfect for relaxing, but with a bus stop nearby and Oxford’s park & ride service, it is easy to get to the festival and the city itself. The campsite has extensive facilities which include a fitness suite, leisure
centre with indoor pools, spa and sauna, games room and play area.

Tewkesbury Abbey Campsite, Gloucestershire

This Tewkesbury campsite is just a short walk from the old historic town itself, and almost in the shadow of the ancient Abbey. A bus service from Tewkesbury’s High Street takes you to into Gloucester where the Gloucester Quays Food Festival takes place. This year it runs from 19-21 July and celebrity chefs, Gino D’Acampo and James Martin, have already confirmed their attendance. There will be over 60 tempting food stalls, live demos, music and cooking masterclasses.

Somers Wood is an adults-only campsite, in open woodland and is the closest site to the NEC. The BBC Good Food Show takes place twice a year at the NEC – the Summer show on 12-16 June and the Winter show on 27 November – 1 December. At the shows you can see some of Britain’s top chefs in live demonstrations, sample food before you buy in a speciality food market, get tips on growing your own produce and shop from hundreds of unique exhibitor stalls. Children can get involved too on the weekend with two free children per full paying adult. The campsite has a large area for RVs, and pitches are all hardstandings. One mile away in Meriden village are shops, a pub and several restaurants.
East Fleet Farm, Dorset

Weymouth harbour is the perfect backdrop for the annual Dorset Seafood Festival, which provisionally will take place on 13 and 14 July. There are over 80 stalls, mouth-watering seafood menus, celebrity chefs and local ales. Weymouth’s seventeenth century waterfront is home to some of Dorset’s finest pubs, restaurants, family attractions and architecture. The bustling harbour is steeped in history too. East Fleet Farm sits on the shores of Fleet Lagoon overlooking Chesil Beach. The Jurassic Coast Path runs along the shoreline at the edge of the park and Weymouth is only three miles away. There’s a modern amenity block and also the Old Barn family bar which opens from Easter, serving meals and take away.

For those who like their food hot, the North East Chilli Fest is a must. Seaton Delaval Hall hosts the event on 6-7 July. From sauces and chutneys, to curries and gifts, there will be a range of chilli-inspired dishes from places like America, Spain and Mexico. Old Hartley is a members-only campsite, 1.5 miles from Seaton Delaval Hall, on a clifftop overlooking the St Mary’s Island lighthouse.

Each September, Galway City comes alive as it celebrates the Galway International Oyster & Seafood Festival, which takes place this year on 27-29 September. Events include a seafood trail in some of the city’s best restaurants, a food village, the world oyster opening championship, live music and family activities. Earlier in the year, the Galway Food Festival (28 March - 1 April) celebrates all that is good about Galway food and dining. In a perfect position for both these events is Salthill Caravan Park. On the coast overlooking Galway Bay, you can walk into Galway city on the coast path, or take the bus which passes the main gate.
