Adventure Motorhoming

That Adrias Matrix kept up so well with a rally winning team across tough terrain speaks volumes about the built quality, and it got us thinking. For the more adventurous among us, where can you feasibly travel in a motorhome and what options are available?

At the recent National Motorhome Show in Peterborough we came across the Bimobil EX358, built on an Iveco base, fiercely towering over everything around it in the main arena. At around £137,000, it’s quite the hefty price tag for a real top end vehicle, but if you want to travel in luxury around the world in a motorhome that can take whatever is thrown at it, it’s a good option. Of course you could spend your money elsewhere on a smaller vehicle.
If you happen to be the proud owner of a Mitsubishi Fuso, EarthCruiser will convert it into a fully equipped, high-end expedition vehicle for around £70,00. Again, not a particularly cheap option, but what you do get is a vehicle almost guaranteed to get you through the thick of things.

For quite a bit less money, you could try out the American conversion company Sportsmobile. For around £55,000 you could get your hands on a 4-berth Quigley built on a Ford RB-50 base with a 6 litre diesel engine. Depending on where you’d like to trek, it could be an ideal option too, saving on shipping costs. Sportsmobile are based out of Texas so an expedition through Central and South America or through the Rockies and up to Canada would be more than feasible.

Then again, if you want to go really cheap you can pick up a fully converted early 1990’s Mitsubishi L300 van for under £5000. It might be old but with a little mechanical knowhow and a few running repairs, this van will happily take you to the ends of the earth. And for that price, you can afford to spend a little on it, compared with the models that will empty even the deepest of purses.

Where can you go?

Where do you want to go? In any one of these vehicles, the world is your oyster. Explore anywhere with a road. Or for that matter, without a road. As long as you carry enough provisions to get you from one place to the next, or know what you can forage for and what water sources you can drink from, there’s no reason to ever stop exploring.
