Torbay Motor Vehicle Repairs - Advertorial

A TORBAY motor firm has unveiled its second major expansion within six months following an enormous increase in business since joining the elite division of the motor industry.

Torbay Motor Vehicle Repairs Ltd of Brixham has expanded its workshop, taken on additional staff and increased its working bays from five to 14 in order to cope with the extra demand.

The multi thousand pound investment will also see the firm break into the motorhome market and cement its position as one of the biggest names in the motor repair industry in the south west.

Six months ago the company fulfilled a 14-year old ambition to win recognition from one of the country’s biggest names in the motor trade when it was granted Bosch Car Service status, firmly putting it in the elite division of the motor industry.

The accolade enables TMVR to operate as an independent garage but with the back up of Bosch, a world leader in electronic development engineering for the motor trade. TMVR specialises in general motor repairs offering a full range of skills under one roof with MOT’s, full diagnostic and electrical work on both petrol and diesel vehicles.

According to managing director Andy Laywood, the latest expansion has only been possible because of customer confidence which has come about as a result of the company’s Bosch car service status linked to the fact that all work is carried out under the Office of Fair Trading Code of Conduct.

The biggest change is within the company’s workshop on the Torbay Trading Estate in New Road, Brixham.

The original workshop featured just five bays but following the improvement works, there are now 14 which will enable staff to nearly treble their workload and break into the motorhome market. The new- look workshop features new ramps large enough to take small to large motorhomes and light to medium commercial vehicles.

Andy and his wife Jayne are motorhome owners themselves and have always felt a niche market existed in Torbay for repairs and storage. The new look workshop also boasts spacious outside parking, which will open up new storage opportunities for all motorhome and caravan users.

Andy, who has over 30 years’ experience in the motor industry and has always kept himself in the forefront of technology with on-going investment in equipment and training, explained: “The recognition from Bosch opened up huge areas of knowledge and experience which is not available to many other garages.

“We have built a new office and reception with a comfortable waiting area for customers and provide loan cars and vans while work is being carried out on their vehicles, thereby helping those in business to carry on working without being stranded with no transport.”

Andy looks after the workshop while his son, Grant, who joined the business three years ago, uses his skills in the newly built service and reception area, alongside his mother, Jayne.

Andy moved to Brixham from Leicester in 1986 transferring a successful mobile mechanics business. The following year he opened a garage in St Mary’s side of Brixham, and was so successful that within two years he was expanding and opened an MOT station.

He remained there until 1992 before taking a two-year gap and reopened his business in 1994 but continued success meant he was obliged to move into bigger premises on the Torbay Trading Estate where he has been ever since.

Andy and Grant are assisted in the workshop by Shaun, who has 21 years of Volvo experience and who also looks after the MOT’s, Johnathon and apprentice Conor.

The company has also taken on a  new BMW trained technician Marcus to look after a new section of the workshop which has been designed with special diagnostic equipment for Mercedes and BMWs.
