IF you’re tempted to try the freedom of the motorhome holiday lifestyle but aren’t sure enough yet to buy one, hiring is a perfect option.

Close to the M6, in the North West, we discovered a company whose hire service goes much further than most. It extends to full equipment including bedding, towels, tableware and full kitchen equipment, all included in the hire cost.

Motorhomes UK’s nine-vehicle fleet is amazingly comprehensively equipped, with fitted satellite television, an ironing board, iron, picnic chairs, two disposable tray-type barbecues trays and a selection of family DVDs and games.

Tea, coffee and sugar are in cupboards and there’s a bottle of wine in the fridge at the start of every hire. Advice on routes and campsite recommendations is all part of the package.

At the start of your holiday a member of staff gives you a detailed handover explanation of how everything in the motorhome works and you have the assurance of anytime telephone contact in case of any queries.

Motorhomes UK also provide a fascinating bespoke conversion service. This company will create a motorhome to your requirements – with unique layouts, the exact equipment you specify – in anything from a small van conversion to a tag-axle coachbuilt motorhome.

As a guide, £3,500 will buy you a conversion from panel van to campervan, complete with bed, all services, fridge, full oven and grill.

At the other end of the price spectrum, Motorhomes UK recently created for a customer a Solar Saturn, six-berth with two-door garage.


Based on a Fiat AL-KO chassis it cost the buyer £63,000, but Louise Degnen, the company’s hire specialist, explained that the quality and specification of this unit was comparable with motorhomes costing £100,000.

Motorhome hire costs:

A four-berth Auto-Trail or Lunar Moonstar starts at £90 a day, or £470 per week. A six-berth Dethleffs Advantage costs £110 per day, or £570 for a week. Insurance is included in the hire cost.

The minimum age is 25, maximum is 75 (drivers aged 23 and 24 will have to agree to pay a surcharge to cover the greater insurance excess).

Unlimited mileage is part of the deal – and you can even bring your dog, but keep him well groomed, because if he leaves too many of his hairs in the motorhome you may find that you lose part of your £500 bond to pay for the extra cleaning.
