Trevella Park, Cornwall

6e228f47-eb76-4415-90f9-a0c234d36de5
DOWN a maze of car-width lanes punctuated by the occasional pretty white cottage we found something approaching floral campsite perfection.

Our route to Trevella, though, was courtesy of sat-nav which took us the non-tow route; follow the guidance on the website or the brochure and you’ll have no road-width challenges. Trevella is, in fact, very easy to find.

It’s off the A3075; follow the signs for Crantock, off the A392; Trevella is signed from Crantock.

Trevella, at the height of summer, is a floral showpiece. Hydrangeas, hanging baskets, bushes and shrubs are all groomed to perfection and create a splendid array.

Fabulous views
Pitches are terraced and level, on a gently sloping field that reaches down to this site’s star attraction: a complex of fishing lakes.

The floral fantasy doesn’t stop at the shores of the lakes – there are lilies in the water and an island between the lakes where wildflowers are encouraged and nature-trail pathways are mown through the foliage.

The whole site occupies 26 acres. Separate fields create an appealing small-site feel.

All the family is catered for here – fishing, adventure playground, crazy golf, pets’ corner that’s home to rabbits, games room, television room – but in a quiet manner.

Usual showers, laundry and washing-up arrangements in three separate buildings match the high quality of the first impression of this site.

Fishing and picnics
More showers and family bathrooms are planned. And it won’t be long before you find the café-restaurant where breakfasts, jacket-potato-type lunch snacks and dinner are available.

And if you arrive too late in an evening to check in at the office, you can park in the “late arrival” area.

Views from Trevella are a delight – over a patchwork of fields towards St Austell.

The site was established almost 50 years ago. It has acquired five stars and a gold David Bellamy award for the last eight years.

Trevella may have a wonderful remote appeal but you don’t have to drive every time you leave the site.

Surfing is available a 20-minute walk away at Crantock Beach, you can take a walk to the River Gannel – that ‘s another 20 minutes away.

Or – of especial appeal to motorhomers who want to leave their unit on site – there’s a bus service from outside the gate of the site and Newquay is little over two miles away.

Outdoor eating and more flowers
Convenience exists, too, in the form of the site’s shop. Freshly baked croissants and baguettes give it a continental flavour alongside Cornish produce, pasties and camping gear. And there’s wine and beer on chill… perfect for picnics by the lake…

For us, the biggest appeal of Trevella is that enticing, picturesque lake. You don’t have to immerse yourself in the focus of fishing to find this a delightful place.

Sit on the banks by the lake and sunbathe. The only sound is a stream running from the lake to the River Gannel.
