Small park with a long history

b7d7676d-7d27-4a6a-8990-88e463fedd9e

Residents of Longacre Park in South Hykeham, Lincolnshire, could be forgiven for seeing the occasional ghostly centurion.

The reason is that Longacre lies a stone’s throw away from the site of the old Fosse Way. That used to be the best-known Roman road in the country, linking nearby Lincoln with Exeter, Devon, 230 miles away.

Comprising 16 park homes spread across an acre of land, Longacre was originally a potato field. That was until 1957 when Frederick Western obtained planning permission to develop a residential park-home estate there.

Some 15 years later on Frederick’s death, his son Ivor took over and 41 years later he is still there, living with his wife in a bungalow alongside the park.

The surrounding land, well wooded, is given over to residential properties or farming with, beyond, a number of lakes popular with the sailing and fishing fraternity.

All but one of the homes on Longacre are twins, all with parking alongside. Three quarters have garages too, each featuring a distinctive bright red door. Gardens show plenty of evidence of tender loving care.

Longacre is well placed for local amenities with Lincoln itself just 15 minutes’ drive away.

At the time of my visit there was a 40x20 Tingdene Barnwell available for sale, price £85,000 plus three vacant plots suitable for homes up to 40x20. Plot fees are £108.33 per calendar month.

Minimum age at Longacre is 50 and pets are allowed at the park owners’ discretion.
