Park home charge is attacked as immoral

3ac44838-51df-4597-8288-5e0a9ecdbbe4

Outdated, inequitable and immoral. That was the verdict on the 10 per cent commission charge which park-home sellers have to pay park owners when selling their homes.

That verdict was pronounced by Sonia McColl, founder of the Justice campaign, speaking at a roadshow organized last month in Hampshire by park-home insurance specialists Towergate.

It was the eighth such Towergate roadshow in 18 months. Previous events have been held in counties right across England: Cornwall, Dorset, Kent, Gloucestershire, Staffordshire, Norfolk and Surrey.

Along with park-home owners, the 100-plus people at the Hampshire event included representatives of the police, housing authorities and trading standards.

Proposals which feature in the petition are as follows:
  • A government review leading to a lower rate of commission, if not abolition.
  • If abolition is achieved, the site owner to be prevented from adding any of the previous commission charge to the pitch fee.
  • A change in the law so that, if it continues, the commission charge is levied only on the difference between the last seller’s price and the latest sale price received.
The aim is to get at least half of the country’s 200,000 park-home residents to sign
her new petition in time for her to deliver it to Downing Street in the New Year.

Local MP Caroline Nokes who also spoke at the meeting said she had been ‘amazed’ at the high level of interest in park homes which she had witnessed when she attended a meeting at the House of Commons. Ms Nokes said she had been shocked at the way some park-home owners had been treated.

‘It was jaw dropping,’ she told the meeting.
