Bellamy lines up for Extrudawood

ENVIRONMENTAL guru  Professor David Bellamy took  to the Tingdene stand at The  Lawns last month to sing  the praises of Extrudawood, an external cladding made from recycled polystyrene.

The material is being used by Tingdene for the first time on its new Harcourt ‘L’ Lodge, shown for the first time at the Caravan Extravaganza at Hull.

Extrudawood has already been used by caravan holiday homes manufacturers, and also by NJS Lodges, as well as for decking and verandas, and even furniture.

“Nine million cubic metres of polystyrene goes to landfill every year,” Professor Bellamy pointed out, “so turning it into a product like this is great.

“Your holiday home may have to be scrapped after ten or twelve years, but then the Extrudawood can be chipped  down and recycled again. You just can’t recycle wood in the  same way.”

The professor said he had  first seen Extrudawood 13 years ago on the Isle of Wight, where the company is based. “It’s a real product of the green movement,” he insisted. And, he added, “Because it’s resistant to things like fungi and termites, it could have a real impact in places like Africa.”

Extrudawood can be cut, planed and screwed just like real wood, but can be cleaned with a garden hose, and is virtually maintenance-free. Though when new it’s surface has a shiny, plastic appearance, it weathers over time to a matt finish more like real wood.

The product is available in a variety of colours and wood effects, such as teak, oak, beech and mahogany. Because the colour runs throughout the material, it does not fade.
