All ages welcome at this park home estate

The media has been full of reports about a housing bubble caused by a shortage of affordable homes, especially for young couples with children.

One solution would be for them to buy park homes, which traditionally are much less expensive than their bricks’n’mortar alternatives.

The trouble is that 95 per cent of park-home estates in this country don’t allow resident children and have a minimum age above 45.

But it was the idea of catering for young couples with or without children which lay behind the development back in the 1950s of Wick Farm, a residential park-home estate at Headington, four miles to the north east of Oxford city centre. There is no minimum age limit or ban on resident children here.

Roger Buswell and his sister Katy run the park. And not just Wick Farm. There are three other Buswell parks close to Oxford, all of which operate without any minimum age limit and all of which welcome resident children.

As Katy puts it: ‘I believe that residential parks have a great role to play in the provision of affordable or lower cost housing. Although many parks may be restricted to the retired, we believe that park homes provide a valuable source of housing for younger people too.’
