Advertising feature - Heron Lakes

IT'S a couple of years since we visited Heron Lakes for our Christmas 2007 feature, and things have been moving on apace since then. What was a park in the early stages of development is now an established leisure lodge estate with an enthusiastic core of home owners.

The park is the vision of the Bird family, local farmers who spent eight years on the research and planning of the project. Set in 75 acres, and with a total of only 50 lodges, Heron Lakes is one of the lowest density parks in the UK.

The Birds’ aim was to achieve the co-existence of nature with a like-minded community of owners to benefit the environment – and, with four lakes on the site, to create a little piece of the Lake District in the heart of East Yorkshire.

Working in conjunction with the Department for Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Hull Wildlife Trust, they carefully created a series of lakes and surrounding areas to promote wildlife habitats and encourage diversity.

Apart from the humans, visitors now include deer, hares, swans, ducks, sandmartins and, of course, herons. The lakes themselves are now a fly fisherman’s dream, and the fishing is free for residents.

In addition, with advice from the Forestry Commission, 40,000 trees of all varieties have been planted.

The park is ideally located just four miles from the historic town of Beverley, famous for its beautiful Minster church, just six miles from the coast and within easy reach of Hull and York. It is also close to regional airports. There is a golf course within a couple of miles, and other activities, such as riding and sailing, are also available locally.

Future plans for the park include a spectacular leisure complex, which will include a fitness suite.

Vacant plots are available for lodges up to 65ft long x 22ft wide.

WHAT CAN I DO AROUND HERE?

Water lilies - If you can’t get to Monet’s garden at Givenchy in France, enjoy the National Collection of Hardy Water Lillies at Burnby Hall Gardens, eight acres that include a Victorian Garden, Secret Garden and the Stewart Museum, containing the eclectic collection of an habitual round-the-world-traveller.
Rare breeds
- If you have children or grandchildren they will love Cruckley Animal Farm, a working farm and rare breeds centre with daily demonstrations, regular kids’ events and plenty of furry things to cuddle. You can even spend a day helping to run the farm on a Farm For Fun Day.
