Walking festival shows the best of Wales

The Gower peninsula in south Wales was the first place in Britain to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), in 1956, and for the last ten years has hosted an annual walking festival.
Organised entirely by volunteers, this family-friendly event is a great opportunity to see the wildlife of the Gower and the surrounding area.This year’s Gower Walking Festival is held 7-22 June 2014 and includes 72 guided walks and activities for experienced walkers, leisurely strollers, indeed people of all walking abilities.
Those seeking a strenuous walk might be attracted to the two-day Coastal Challenge which takes in the whole of the peninsula. Alternatively, a look at the industrial heritage of the area in walks such as Copperopolis might appeal.
The more literary-minded might take the walk to Dylan Thomas’s house in Cwmdonkin (especially as 2014 is his centenary year), or perhaps a walk following the life of the poet Vernon Watkins. Among the other specialist walks is one aimed at photographers, at Morfa , or a circular walk in north Gower called Cwmcerdinen.
