UPDATE: SeaFrance delays resumption of sailings

4a1e0731-05aa-4135-ad9d-96159ec0d92e

SeaFrance, which provides ferry crossings between Dover and Calais, has said it will only resume sailings across the Channel after it has resolved what it terms 'safety and security' issues.

It was expected that sailings would resume after a court ruling yesterday. But its ferries have remained in port, while the company resolves 'securty and safety' issues.

In a statement to its agents, SeaFrance said the "commercial activities of the company will resume as soon as all the issues concerning safety and security are resolved".

It advised that any passengers who have booked crossings and find that their ferry is not sailing will be transferred to an alternative operator.

It says passengers should still check-in at the port as per normal.

However, it said that customers booked on day return or 36-hour tickets should re-book to travel after November 23 or contact SeaFrance on 0845-4580666 to apply for a full refund.

The company has four ferries and carries some 3.5 million passengers a year, according to the BBC.

The troubled French ferry operator was put up for sale after running into financial difficulties and entering receivership last year. A rival ferry company had made an offer but this was challenged by another operator.

The case was sent to a Paris court but, prior to this the company took the decision to suspend sailings. Followning this move, its passengers were diverted to other ferry providers or to the Channel Tunnel.

It is now not clear when sailings will resume, despite a French court ruling yesterday (16.11.2011) that the company will be put into full administration but that it will also continue to trade until January 28, 2012.

A new deadline of December 12, 2011, was also set for revised offers for the company.
