Towing over 70 - an error

In the September issue of Caravan, a comment attributed to Sgt Andy Donnelly of West Mercia Police was incorrect.

At the age of 70, drivers retain their legal right to tow any caravan, as long as the towing vehicle does not exceed 3500kg in weight (the Caravan Club recommends that your 'tow' should not exceed 85% of the kerbweight of your towing vehicle).

Caravan contributor Matt Stubbs is 76 and has not been asked to reapply for a licence, or undertake a medical for the DVLA: "The only thing that happened is that I lost my entitlement to drive a vehicle over 3 1/2 tonnes - if I'd realised that I might have decided to apply to keep it. My licence runs until 2014 and I know plenty of people who are towing in their 70s; have one friend who is still towing at 86. It's been no problem at all."
