Airborne adultery excites wildlife fans as ospreys return to Kielder Water

Bird watchers were in for a two-timing thrill in Northumberland recently, when a couple of ospreys returned from Africa and hit it off before their respective partners joined them.

The arrival of these rare birds saw the male osprey presenting the female with a trout treat, straight from Kielder Water. It's the first year that an established female bird as returned before the male, while another male is already present without its female partner.

Joanna Dailey, Kielder osprey expert volunteer said: "We're very excited by the arrival of our birds.

"This 'hedging the bets' is normal behaviour and it's fascinating to observe, but we hope it will end very soon with the arrival of the long term partners!"

The rare species, which has been back at Kielder after being extinct in England for 150 years, returned in 2009 and have been successfully breeding at the park since.

It's not just in the wild that you'll get to see these brilliant birds though, as some special technology means you can enjoy the sights from an all the more comfortable and convenient setting too.

Janine Scott, from Kielder Water & Forest Park, explains: "Special cameras installed on the osprey nests mean you can enjoy unique views of the birds at Kielder Castle cafe, and Osprey Watch at Leaplish Waterside Park gives visitors the chance to see and hear about the ospreys from expert volunteers. As the weather improves, wildlife lovers can look forward to another great year of events and activities in our great outdoor playground."

Book a pitch for your osprey adventure at Kielder Water Caravan Park.
