Garmin inReach technology aids in 10,000 incidents
Garmin’s handheld inReach devices have provided SOS assistance to 10,000 worldwide incidents since 2011
The Pacific Crest Trail, European Alps and almost all of New Zealand had the highest number of SOS incidents, though incidents also occurred in cities such as Los Angeles, Phoenix and Aspen, with 50% of those relating to a medical emergency or injury.
According to Garmin, the top five activities that resulted in an SOS call were hiking/backpacking, driving, motorcycling, climbing/mountaineering and boating. Driving incidents accounted for 12% of the SOS triggers, with many of those using their inReach device when outside of mobile phone service.
The GPS specialist’s inReach satellite technology allows for two-way text messaging, location tracking and SOS emergency response services, thanks to a dedicated SOS button on Garmin inReach devices.
Once the button is pressed, the device sends a distress message to Garmin Response, a 24/7 emergency response centre, who will then enlist the help of the user’s emergency contacts, and relevant search and rescue organisations.
