Caravanners recognised for boosting UK tourism

THE important role that caravanners play in British tourism was highlighted as part of British Tourism Week, which ends today (March 18).

An event in Shropshire, held as part of the week-long event to recognise British tourism, heard that caravan holiday home parks in the area alone generate about £10 million a year for the local economy.

Shrewsbury Mayor Councillor John Cooke and Barmouth Mayor Councillor Rob Williams attended the lunchtime reception as did local caravan holiday home park operators and representatives from caravan sales company Salop Leisure.

Edward Goddard, of Oxon Pool Holiday Home and Touring Park, said: “Tourism generates a large amount of money for the local economy but because it’s not a vote winner, the industry doesn’t receive the priority it deserves.

“When people are on holiday they relax and spend more money. I see them returning to our park laden with bags of shopping from Shrewsbury town centre.”

Salop Leisure’s Touring Sales Director David Middleton said: “Owners of touring caravans, motorhomes and caravan holiday homes, who love visiting Shrewsbury and the surrounding area, make a considerable contribution to the local economy, which is often overlooked.”
