A poll taken by cleaning guru Autoglym has revealed that millions of car owners in the UK are depreciating the value of their vehicles by failing to keep them in good condition. Motorists could lose as much as £2000 when selling their vehicles on if they haven't been properly looked after.

The research has shown that less than 20% of car owners check their oil with the recommended once a week regularity, and a quarter of owners admit to only doing so once a year at best. The figures are similar when it comes to checking water levels too.

Advice from the experts

To combat the number of people failing to look after their towcar properly, Autoglym has created a video, backed by racing driver, F1 legend and caravan fan Johnny Herbert, to get Brits to clean up their act.

"Regardless of market depreciation, a car that is kept in tip-top condition can be worth thousands more than one that is not," explained Johnny Herbert.

"There's simply a lack of care and knowledge when it comes to looking after our vehicles, but with the right products and know how, we can all save money in the long run – it's time we all started to take pride in our cars."

Autoglym's chief executive Paul Caller is urging UK motorists to maintain their cars more regularly, stating: "We've created a video called 'cleaning up Britain's cars' to help UK motorists learn more about how easy it is to look after your car and hopefully save money. We hope this will spark car owners into action and will transform Britain's cars from messy motors to valuable vehicles."
