Can your car tow more than one caravan?

It's a crazy notion that your car can tow more than one caravan, right?

It's illegal, downright stupid and you wouldn't do it. And, imagine the tailback you'd have and those angry drivers trying to overtake if you were towing more than one caravan.

But, one car maker has done just that; they towed 15 caravans at once with one of their pick-ups. Ford towed the procession, which weighed 20 tonnes with its Ranger to demonstrate its towing prowess.

Ford did the stunt at the Millbrook Proving Ground near Bedford with Ranger. The pick-up has a 213 PS, 2.0-litre EcoBlue Bi-turbo engine, which towed the 100-metre long caravan. The caravans the team used were a mix of models from the 1950s, a van for dog lovers and one with a hippy theme.

The driver for the stunt, Paul Swift, said:

"This was the slowest stunt I've ever done – but also one of the hardest. Trying to keep the caravans on the straight and narrow while the car drove past was a tough challenge and one that really demonstrates the Ranger's capabilities."

The Ford Ranger has a towing capacity of up to 3,500 kg and a maximum payload capacity of 1,252 kg.

Ford tells us they sold nearly 52,000 Rangers across Europe in 2018, 15% up on 2017.

The Ranger looks like an interesting towcar for anyone with a big, heavy caravan. With its pulling power, the Ford Ranger looks like a serious choice for caravanners with big vans to tow.
