Stronger sightings but bluebells and forestry still under threat, says Woodland Trust

Following last year's cold spring, the Woodland Trust has reported carpets of bluebells bouncing back this year, with nearly 200 records submitted to its Nature's Calendar website so far compared to just 43 this time last year.

However, the charity is calling for better protection of the flower as it's concerned for the bluebell's long term survival in the face of increasing threats from development, invasive species and the increasing worry of a change in environment.

Nearly 50% of the world's bluebells can be found in the UK. Despite these promising results this year, changes in records show that climate change is one of the greatest long-term threats to ancient woodland.

"Climate change is not only affecting flowering dates but is also a factor in the number of pests and diseases in the UK quadrupling since the year 2000," explains Woodland Trust director of conservation, Austin Brady.

Austin continues: "Increased protection for all ancient woodland is vital, and linking them with newly planted woodland and hedges will allow wildife safer passage through the countryside. This will help make out countryside more resilient, and offer more scope for adaptation to the impact of climate change too."

More than 400 ancient woods are currently listed by the Woodland Trust as being under threat. The Trust recently launched a campaign urging government to increase protection for ancient woodland in England and safeguard its future. The charity firmly believes that ancient woodland, an irriplaceable habitat, should be preserved for the benefit of the many species which rely on it for survival.
