Blaze destroys 60 stored caravans

A major fire at a campsite in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, has destroyed about 60 touring caravans being kept there for storage.

The fire, at Croft Farm Leisure and Water Park, was reported shortly after midnight on Sunday 24 November 2013. Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue service reported 11 crews and specialist appliances in attendance in an incident involving about 50 ‘towing caravans and mobile homes in storage’.

The fire was contained on site and was not a risk to the local population, according to the fire service’s Twitter feed. The campsite owners have confirmed to Caravan and Outandaboutlive.co.uk that there were no injuries.

A suggestion that the blaze may have been initiated by a flying Chinese lantern, possibly released from a party being held at the campsite’s clubhouse, has been dismissed as speculation.

Croft Farm Waterpark is a caravan and camping park which offers a variety of watersports on its own lake. Earlier this month it hosted a ‘Bonfire and Fireworks Spectacular’ which is prominently promoted in its website. The touring park had already closed for the season when the fire occurred, and is scheduled to re-open as usual on 1 March 2014.
