Big Brother could boost touring caravan sales

THE use of a caravan in this year’s Big Brother reality TV show could help push sales of tourers above last year’s figure, experts predict.

Housemates on the Channel 4 show regular used the caravan parked in the garden as somewhere to escape the tensions of the house.

Its use, coupled with other media interest in caravans and the widely-publicised centenary celebrations of the Caravan Club earlier this year, could push tourer sales above last year’s total.

Members of the National Caravan Council (NCC) manufactured 29,290 touring caravans last year. Adding this figure to the predicted number of imports means an estimated 33,000 sales in the UK in 2006.

John Lally, Director General of the NCC, said: “There is a huge focus on caravans in the media this year. Everything from the Caravan Club’s centenary celebrations to Big Brother has highlighted the varied delights of caravan products.

“We are fortunate in having a very loyal customer base and a growing population of over 50s, being the primary market for these products.”

The NCC said Britain outsold its nearest rival, Germany, by nearly 50 per cent and UK sales were significantly higher than those in both The Netherlands and France.
