Bailey brings in extra protection against caravan stone dents

b6e1d006-fb06-49f9-8a4c-7e425c8e7ef2
FOLLOWING concerns from owners of Bailey Pegasus and Olympus models about stone-dents on front panels, Bailey has brought in additional protection for the front of its Alu-Tech constructions models.

Bailey has upgraded the protection film fitted to the front of Olympus and Pegasus caravans and is now monitoring its performance.

The manufacturer is also now looking at other design solutions to prevent a re-occurrence of this problem by providing additional protection to this area of the body shell.

Bailey tells us that it’s envisaged this will be available as both a production and retro-fit item for all Alu-Tech models.

Stuart Smith wrote to Go Caravan magazine raising concerns and his letter is printed in the September issue.

It reads:

"We purchased our first caravan in 2006, a nine-month-old Bailey Pageant Champagne. We transferred the warranty for only £10 and any issues were immediately put right by Bailey.

Recently we saw the Pegasus and were impressed by Bailey’s advertising, stating how durable and strong these caravans were. So we purchased a brand new Pegasus.

At first I was impressed but a little saddened at the few minor niggles like a cracked rear plastic bumper, a noisy pump and scratches to light fittings.

No problem; these are being rectified by the dealer but sadly at a very slow pace. Though to be fair they had sold nine on the day we purchased ours, so there was a big turnover.

Then we noticed a major design fault. The front is aluminum and stones flicked up from ours and passing vehicles slam into this and it dents very easily. I then noticed on the Bailey forum that other owners were concerned, and expressed this to Bailey.

Sadly, it appeared that the directors were burying their heads in the sand and hoping this issue would go away. Then out of the blue Bailey announces that from 12 August the Bailey Unicorn will be for sale with – guess what? Yes, new stone protection!!!!

So there was a design fault after all. Will Bailey offer to retrofit this new stone protection to the Pegasus and Olympus models?"

Stuart Smith

In response a Bailey spokesman has replied:

"Firstly we are sorry to hear of Mr Smith’s dissatisfaction with his caravan. I can confirm that we have received similar feedback from a minority of owners of Alu-Tech construction caravans.

In response we recently upgraded the protection film fitted to the front of our Olympus and Pegasus caravans and are now monitoring its performance in the field. We are also now looking at other design solutions to prevent a re-occurrence of this issue by providing additional protection to this area of the body shell. It is envisaged this will be available as both as a production and retro-fit item for all Alu-Tech models."
