Linwater Caravan Park

THIS family-run site offers 60 spacious level pitches, most of which have 16 amp electric hook-ups. It also has some hardstandings. There's also a separate area for tents offered that allows cars to be parked alongside.
This area is also home to 'Timbertents' - innovative timber-built camping pods that take the hassle out of camping. On-site facilities include Scandinavian-style toilet blocks with free showers and privacy cubicles. It's set in a wonderfully peaceful, rural location and is an ideal base for visiting Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, Falkirk and The Royal Highland Showground.

This small, family run, four-star site which opened in 1998, has 60 spacious level pitches, a few of which are on hard standings. Most of these have electric hook ups, even those in the separate tenting area. The reception contains plenty of tourist information, and milk, newspapers and bread can be ordered daily.

The cheerful welcome we received from the site owner was second to none and the Scandinavian-style amenity block really was the best we have ever encountered - both in terms of cleanliness and facilities. There is also a laundry, disabled shower and an outdoor dishwashing area.

Thanks to their commitment to the environment, the site has received a David Bellamy Gold Conservation award for the last few years and has various recycling programmes for paper, glass, plastic, cardboard and cans. The recycling centre is next to the herb garden and, pleasingly, visitors can help themselves to fresh herbs during their stay - a thoughtful touch.

A sand pit provides amusement for the younger visitors and a very pleasant dog walk runs from the site along a feeder canal to the Union Canal. You can follow this path to Almondell Country Park. There are various walks available directly from the site and the owners can provide a leaflet detailing all the walks in the area.

The site is also ideal for visiting Edinburgh - famed for its lack of parking - as there are two Park and Ride services close to the site. Whether you want to visit for the shopping, the castle, the Military Tattoo or the Fringe festival, this is a handy site to stay at.

TV reception is said to be very good on the park (you can even get Channel 5) , while the local library in East Calder offers internet access. The site has also installed WiFi in the reception area, so it's easy to check your emails, or surf the net if you carry your own laptop.
