In Somerset, long, sandy beaches and popular coastal resorts contrast with the dramatic rocky Exmoor coastline.

Whether you want a beach for building sandcastles or a more secluded location for taking in the sound of the waves, you’ll find it all here. Inland you can uncover mystery and Arthurian legend with a trip to Glastonbury or explore the cathedral city of Wells.

Exmoor National Park’s footpaths and bridleways allow you to experience this rugged and unspoilt landscape at your leisure.

Somerset is, of course, cider, cheese and strawberry country, with a tradition of providing excellent local produce. There are several vineyards and cider farms open to the public for you to get a real taste of the west country.

Brean Down and Fort, Brean, Somerset TA8 2RS

Under the care of the National Trust, this natural pier stands 97 metres high and juts out into the sea for 1.5 miles. Breathtaking views, abundant wildlife and a fascinating history combine, with a Victorian fort at the Down’s end to explore.

The Helicopter Museum, Locking Moor Road, Weston-super-Mare BS24 8PP

Billed as the largest dedicated helicopter collection in the world, there are over 100 models on display in an undercover hangar. As well as the exhibits there are a number of open cockpit days, museum events and helicopter experience flights to be enjoyed throughout the year.

WESTON-SUPER-MARE

Stretching for well over two miles, the sandy beach at Weston-super-Mare offers plenty of space for all. The main beach area lies south of the Grand Pier and here you will find seasonal donkey rides, fish and chip shops galore, cafés and plenty of amusements.

There’s a long promenade for a relaxing stroll or gentle bike ride or you can take the Weston Land Train. The beach’s Grand Pier has a selection of rides, a soft play area, museum, cafés and amusements.

Two unique features of the Weston beach are its Sand Sculpture Festival (running between spring and autumn), showcasing the sand sculpting artwork of award-winning international sand artists, and the novelty of parking on the sand at Royal Sands to the south end of the beach.

How to find Weston-Super-Mare beach

From M5: Exit at Junction 21 onto A370 signed Weston-super-Mare and follow for four miles. At Drove roundabout exit onto A3033, signed M5 South and Taunton. In approx ½ mile turn right onto Quantock Road and after 0.3 miles veer left to stay on Quantock Road. At crossroads go straight over, following brown sign for the beach. This leads to on-beach parking (BS23 4NH) and Marine Parade parking (BS23 1BH).
