The Quiet Site Holiday Park in the Lake District has won an important green tourism award. The site near Ullswater has received Cumbria Tourism’s 2012 award for Sustainable Tourism. it comes in the same weekit achieved a Gold level Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) accreditation.
The holiday park, based in the Ullswater Valley and open all year round, caters for tents, caravans and motor caravans and offers accommodation in camping pods made locally from sustainable timber. It is also home to static caravans and self-catering cottages.
The park’s energy consumption has been drastically reduced thanks to installing low energy lighting, re-roofing and re-insulating buildings and installing solar panels to heat the water in the service block.
Water management has also come under the spotlight and the site uses a water treatment reed bed to recycle water.
The site also encourages wildlife through nesting boxes and the maintenance of a wildflower meadow while as much food as possible is sourced locally.
Owner Daniel Holder said: “We are thrilled to win the Cumbria Tourism Sustainable Tourism Award and are celebrating this as a team, as all of our employees are engaged in the sustainable programme that we operate here and all act as ambassadors, on hand to explain practices to guests who take an interest.”
