Northern Motorcaravan Show - reasons to visit Yorkshire

ATTENDING the Northern Motorcaravan Show in the North Yorkshire Moors will present you with a fantastic opportunity of combining climbing aboard the latest motorhomes and meeting friends with enjoying some of the best countryside and attractions England has to offer.

The seasoned UK travellers among you will know that the beautiful setting of the North Yorkshire Moors has much to offer the visitor. And showgoers won't have to venture that far either as Pickering itself boasts many attractions

There's much to see and do in this vibrant market town with the likes of a medieval castle, churches, shops, restaurants, wine bars and cafes. The town and its attractions are compact and are easily accessible on foot, with plenty of parking available.

Attractions include Pickering Castle, built by William the Conqueror as part of his campaign to subdue the people of the north. It was once a symbol of his power and was feared by the local population.

Today, it is a quiet and intriguing haven with many nooks and crannies to explore. Visitors can climb to the top of the central mound for stunning countryside views or simply enjoy a picnic in the grass area.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is another major attraction and is the country’s most popular heritage railway. Steam trains travel along an 18-mile line between Pickering and the village of Grosmont, passing through a variety of scenery in the heart of the North York Moors National Park.

It passes through the village of Goathland, better known as Aidensfield from the TV series, Heartbeat. As a bonus, the organisers of this year’s Northern Motorcaravan Show have negotiated ‘buy one get one free’ half price entry for campers at this year’s show.

Beck Isle Museum is also based in Pickering. It is an award-winning museum that offers something for every age group. The Education Room provides a hands-on approach to history and a taste of life in Victorian times.

•    Dalby Forest: With more than 8,000 acres of woodland to explore, the area includes plenty of waymarked trails for all abilities. Situated on the southern slopes of the North Yorks Moors National Park, the forest is a home for birds such as the crossbill and the nightjar. A stunning area for wildlife and natural beauty.

•    Castle Howard: Arguable one of the most beautiful stately homes in England, it was begun in 1699 and took more than 100 years to complete. It is set in more than 1,000 acres of parkland. Inside paintings by Gainsborough, Reynolds and Holbein adorn the rooms inside.

•    Cawthorn Camps: This is one of the archaeological treasures of the North York Moors and is a monument to the might of ancient Rome. Almost 2,000 years ago a detachment of Roman troops halted here and built a temporary fort. Its defensive banks and ditched remain largely intact today.

•    Betty’s Teashop: First opened in 1919, Betty’s will tempt your tastebuds with a mouthwatering choice of more than 300 breads, cakes and chocolates and more than 50 different teas and coffees.

•    Scarborough Castle: The site has a history that dates back many thousands of years. Visitors can enjoy interactive exhibitions and be taken on a journey through the past. There are also some exceptional viewing platforms.

Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay and Filey are also a short drive away but wherever you choose to go – may we wish you a pleasant and enjoyable trip.
